31 BLACKFRIARS ROAD
This project involved the restoration and conversion of the grade II listed former Manchester Baths into four offices for the creative industries. The practice acquired the building in 2001 when it was in a derelict state and it is now our main office. The aim was to bring the building back to life through an interplay between the restored fabric of the existing building and the introduction of new elements related to its new use. The previous single volume has been interrupted by a new circulation system and space division. This has allowed the creation of significant changes in ceiling heights which produce varying levels of intimacy or release. The solution is driven by an interest in the subliminal things that influence the way people engage with buildings and develop a sense of belonging.
