FOURTH CHURCH OF CHRIST
This project involves the insertion of a new church into the basement, ground and first floors of a 1950's office building in Manchester City Centre.
Significant structural alterations allowed the introduction of two and three-storey height voids. The result is a spatially complex arrangement which offers surprising volumes and vantage points.
Working with the church committee was an unforgettable experience for us. With an average age in excess of 70 years, their positivity and receptiveness to change was nothing short of inspirational.
Although the end product is stripped of ornament and overt religious symbolism, in keeping with Christian Scientist beliefs, the congregation has commented that they find the building spiritual and other-worldly. This pleases us no end.
The project received an RIBA Award (1999)
