PEOPLE'S HISTORY MUSEUM
This is a conversion of a semi-derelict Edwardian Hydraulic Pumping Station into a new museum and exhibition gallery to celebrate the social history of working people.
It involved the introduction of a sequence of spaces along a new movement system connecting various levels of the building.
The journey through the museum is animated by a series of contemporary insertions which are counterpointed against the robustness of the existing structure.
Whilst there is a distinction between old and new, there is also an attempt to unify them, so that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
