PRIMROSE BANK, OLDHAM
This is a mixed-tenure residential development on a hillside site, bordering Oldham town centre. It forms part of the 'Gateways to Oldham PFI initiative' and consists of 192 new dwellings integrated with 43 existing houses that are to be refurbished. There is also a new Community Centre and a series of integrated landscaped areas. It makes radical changes to the character and legibility of a failing neighbourhood by introducing a clear pattern of streets and public spaces which make connections with their surroundings. It draws inspiration from local hill villages where building lines are distorted to respond to topography, creating a rich and varied sequence of places. The development also sits next door to a successful neighbourhood of Victorian terraced housing and our aim has been to capture some of the qualities of solidity and dignity that characterises the identity of this existing stock.
