SPECTRUM, MANCHESTER
This is a major project in the Greengate quarter of Salford, on the edge of Manchester City Centre. It consists of a dense group of residential/commercial buildings which re-define street edges and form a series of green courtyard spaces within. The issue of orientation played a significant role. The alignment of buildings ensures that no apartments face solely north and that maximum sun penetration is received into the courtyards. These rectilinear high-rise buildings are juxtaposed against more complex lower buildings that respond to the irregular shapes generated by this triangular site. Whilst there is an underlying order to the development as a whole, its perception from the surrounding streets is made up of an apparently complex assembly of buildings which present a broken skyline and continually changing vistas.
