RIBA Award – Baker Place Shortlisted

12.03.2020

We are delighted that Baker Place has been shortlisted for a 2020 RIBA Award.

The project places a strong emphasis on the well-being of residents through a focus on daylighting, landscape, generous private and communal external spaces and sustainability. The scheme comprises 67 apartments across three buildings, ranging in height from four to five storeys, arranged around a landscaped communal courtyard. The material selection is borne out of a desire to create a cluster of mellow buildings that sit comfortably within this natural setting. As such the external wall material is a ‘stoney buff’ coloured brick, which provides a gentle contrast to the retained trees.

Our client One Manchester has an established base and stock in Hulme, and has invested heavily in the area. One Manchester was determined to ensure this development strengthened the neighbourhood, with integration between existing and new residents being central to the vision for the scheme. Baker Place brings high quality accommodation to an area of the city that is fast expanding.

This and a neighbouring development of a similar scale created 17 apprenticeship opportunities with 55 local people attending ‘Work Ready’ training sessions with 22 people taking up work placement opportunities.

We are looking forward to the judges’ visit in due course.
